Rajma / Kidney Bean Gravy

This is one dish that i always get connected with a sweet memory which travels from long long place... Ooty. Yes i have a childhood friend named Suja and once when i and my family visited her this was the dish prepared by her mom and it was so delicious when served piping hot with some rice... so everytime i think of Rajma my memories travel back and get refreshed with the sweet moments i spent there in ooty...

Even today while cooking i was just brushing the memories...

Lets make some memories...

Ingredients

Rajma / Kidney Beans 1 cup dried Soaked overnight
Onion 1 large chopped finely
Tomato 3 pureed
Ginger Garlic Paste 1 tbsp
Coriander powder 1 tbsp
Chilli powder 2 tsp or adjust to your taste
Turmeric powder 1 tsp
Salt to taste
Garam masala powder 1 tsp
Coriander leaves for garnishing
Cumin seeds 1 tsp
Oil 2 tbsp
Cream 2 tbsp (optional)

Method

Wash and soak the rajma overnight and next day morning add the beans to water and pressure cook for 1 - 2 whistles and let it sit till the pressure is released by it self. Check if the beans is soft enough if not cook for 1 more whistle.

Chop the onions and puree the tomatoes and keep aside.

In a pan add oil and add cumin seeds and let it splutter, then add the chopped onions and cook them till they turn brown.

Once the onions are browned add the ginger garlic paste and saute till the raw smell vanishes... then add the chilli powder, turmeric powder, corriander powder and mix well so they are well blended.

Now add the tomato puree, salt and cook till you see some traces of oil.
By this time the pressure would be released from the pressure cooker, so add the cooked rajma with 1 cup cooked water ( if you find more water in the rajma remove some and add only 1 cup) to the pan.

Let it cook till you see the traces of oil again, If you wish to add cream add it at this stage.

Garnish with some corriander leaves and serve hot with some roti or rice...

Enjoy...
